Temperaments

We all have important needs in three areas; inclusion, control and affection. These areas can be understood as follows;

Inclusion

  • social orientation and intellectual energies

 

Control 

  • willingness regarding decision making and accepting responsibility for self and/or others

 

Affection

  • need to express and receive love, affection and approval



In all three areas, each of  us exhibits characteristic traits of one or two of the 5 temperaments; Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholy, Supine and Phlegmatic. Here is an outline of the common features of each.

 

Sanguine

  • very social, loves people
  • tends to be less organized
  • needs a lot of affection

 

Choleric

  • sociable, but often with an agenda
  • can be very controlling
  • a born leader

 

Melancholy

  • task-oriented, tends to be a loner
  • self-controlled
  • often appears aloof 

 

Supine

  • sociable, but indirect
  • often with a servile nature
  • requires constant affection

 

Phlegmatic

  • tends to have low energy
  • goes with the flow
  • dry sense of humor
